Steps
- 1
Read the policy first
Find your school's academic integrity and AI policy so you know what process applies and what rights you have.
- 2
Gather your evidence
Export the version history from Google Docs or Word, plus outlines, notes, browser history for sources and any earlier drafts.
- 3
Ask for a meeting
Email your instructor calmly. Say you wrote the work, offer your evidence and ask to discuss it.
- 4
Explain your process
Walk through how you chose the topic, found sources and revised. Being able to discuss your argument in depth is strong evidence.
- 5
Check future work early
Before your next deadline, run your draft through an AI checker so a high score never comes as a surprise.
Why an AI flag is not proof
AI detectors estimate how predictable text is. They don't know who wrote it. A 2023 Stanford study found several popular detectors flagged most essays by non-native English writers as AI-generated, while scoring essays by US eighth graders correctly.
Turnitin itself describes its AI score as something to start a conversation, not a final decision. Several universities, including Vanderbilt, have switched off the AI indicator or told staff not to use it as standalone evidence.
How to prove you wrote your essay
Version history is the strongest thing you have. Google Docs records edits with timestamps under File, Version history. Word does the same for files saved to OneDrive. A document that grew over days, with deletions and rewrites, looks nothing like a block pasted in at once.
Next come working materials: handwritten notes, an outline, highlighted PDFs, library loans. Then your knowledge. If you can explain why you made each argument and what you cut, that conversation usually settles it.

Try it on your own text
Paste a paragraph and see your AI score before and after.

Keep it short and factual. Something like: "I saw my essay was flagged by the AI checker. I wrote it myself and I have my version history and notes. Could we meet so I can show you how I wrote it?"
Avoid attacking the tool or the teacher. You want them on your side when they review the evidence.
Avoid AI false positives next time
Write in a doc with version history turned on from the first sentence. Keep notes as you research.
Before you submit, paste the essay into TextHumanizer and tap Check for AI. If a section scores high, read it again. Often it is a passage you polished until it went flat, or one built on stock phrases. Rewrite it in your own words with a concrete example, and check again.
Questions
Can a teacher fail you only on an AI detector score?
It depends on the institution, but many policies say a detector score alone is not enough evidence. Ask what process applies and request the chance to show your work.
Does Google Docs version history prove I wrote something?
It is strong supporting evidence, because it shows the document being written and revised over time. It is most convincing alongside notes and your ability to discuss the work.
